As the summer starts to wind down, back to school begins for many individuals. With the stress of moving in and meeting new people, many start to look for an outlet to escape. Well, I have the perfect solution, Greek life. Greek life on every campus is handled very differently. Here at Ohio Northern University (ONU), there are four different chapters for young women to join. The four chapters include Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Zeta, Kappa Alpha Theta and Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA). Each of these chapters have different causes of service, in which they raise awareness and money to donate. For these chapters to gain new members, a recruitment process is held for any potential new members. Recruitment consists of four rounds, Open House, Sisterhood, Philanthropy and Preference. Following Preference, recruitment then wraps up with Bid Day. The kickoff of the recruitment rounds starts with Greekapalooza, an open event to anyone interested in Greek life, who just wants to learn a little bit more about each chapter.
I am honored to be a part of Zeta Tau Alpha here on campus. At our table, we had some more basic information available for potential new members to learn about, such as our philanthropy and what it's like to be a part of our sisterhood. For ZTA, our philanthropy is Breast Cancer Awareness and Education. The month of October is very busy for us as it's Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We host different events such as "Chick-fil-A with the ZTA's," "Potatoes with the Zetas" and our annual Pink Out Football game, where we partner up with our very own ONU Men's Football Program to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness. Greek life is such an amazing opportunity to meet so many people, as well as help great causes.
As recruitment kicks off, I am looking forward to meeting the potential new members for each of the sororities. We had an amazing turn out at Greekapalooza and are expecting great things from this new member class. Many of the girls I had spoken with were very on the fence about going through recruitment, and my biggest advice was to go through it. With the recruitment process, there is no commitment. If you feel like this is not meant for you at the end of the recruitment process, you can always withdrawal and at least say you gave it a try. My biggest regret my freshmen year was not going through recruitment, so when sophomore year came around, I was so excited to try. Since then I have found my home away from home with Zeta Tau Alpha, and I cannot wait to see what opportunities come my way. For all my sorority stories of recruitment and beyond, subscribe to stay in the loop!
Until next time XOXO
Hallie
Hallie, when I first was thinking about college, I didn't know if I wanted to play a sport or not. But, I knew if I didn't I would want to be in Greek life. I feel like it is an awesome experience to get to know people fast and get to know them well. I felt like it would be so fun to go to different fun activities and be apart of a group that provides for a good cause! It is so interesting how your philanthropy is breast cancer awareness! My grandmother is actually of survivor of breast cancer and it is a great cause to be a part of!
ReplyDeleteBeing part of Greek life is such an amazing experience to be a part of on campus. I have been a part of Alpha Xi and I really enjoyed so many moments in it. I have met so many people that will become lifelong friends and have had so many amazing leadership roles within. I am so excited for the upcoming recruiting season and all of the new girls that will join.
ReplyDeleteGreek life is never something I’ve really considered joining, only because I never really knew about what exactly it was. Last year I lived in Affinity, and lived in a house with one of the sororities. All of the girls were so nice, and always willing to help us freshman who weren’t super aware of where everything was. I love that the sororities on this campus all work towards a service project, and it seems like a great way to make a lot of friends.
