As the last round of recruitment starts, the process is coming to an end. After this round, each sorority will have an idea of who will be joining them as an official member. Preference round is done differently at every sorority. The consensus of preference round is to try and develop a deeper relationship with the potential new member (PNM). The PNM has talked to many girls throughout the recruitment process and created many bonds. On preference night, the PNM talks to one sister of the sorority for the entire round, someone who they had a strong connection with. Preference round is the most serious and intimate setting of the three rounds.
My preference night last year was something I will never forget. When I was stuck deciding between two sororities, preference night is what helped me clearly decide where I belonged. I could see myself in both sororities, I was deciding between, but I struggled trying to decide. Preference night is such an intimate setting which allows one to be more open and vulnerable with the sister they are talking with. Although I cannot divulge the secrets of how Zeta Tau Alpha runs their preference round, let's just say we had girls leaving in tears. This night can be very emotional for not only PNMs, but also seniors. For seniors, this is their last formal recruitment. This is one of their first "last" of college before they graduate. Seeing the seniors cry ended up making a lot of the underclassmen members cry as well. This just shows how important this sisterhood is to each and everyone of us. Our sisterhood has helped shape each of us and no one wants to leave. Throughout the whole recruitment process, we emphasized how this sisterhood is not just for four years, but for life and this bond is what makes this sisterhood so special to all of us.
After tonight, our chapter will find out which PNMs accepted our bid cards to join our sisterhood and we are so excited. This long-awaited day is finally here and the nerves are fading away. The next time I write to you the PNMs will no longer be PNMs, but new members. I can't help but falling asleep to the thought of expanding our sisterhood and I am so excited.
Until next time XOXO
Hallie
Hi Hallie! Preference night was such a special night for both the PNMs and the girls in the sorority. On preference night, I got to talk to two of the most amazing girls that in the recent weeks I have gotten super close with. The conversations that we had on preference night are one that are so special to me. So excited to hear about bid day!
ReplyDeleteHallie, thank you for sharing so much about the rounds for your sorority! It's super interesting to learn more about the process since I never went through it myself. It sounds like it was a super emotional night for everyone, but also like you all came out with closer bonds. Can't wait for you to share how bid day goes!
ReplyDeleteHi Hallie! Being a part of a sorority was never a priority of mine, because I feel like I get such a similar bond with my theatre people. I did go with my roommate to the Greek Life introductory meeting in Fall 2020 and actually met with a few girls from DZ, but ended up deciding that I didn't have the time to devote to joining a sorority. However, that unbreakable bond just sounds so sweet and important. I am glad I have found that here with the people in my major. I hope tonight went well!
